Derogatory Chants Against Foden's Mother: FA Opts Against Action in Manchester Derby Incident

The Football Association (FA) has decided not to pursue charges against Manchester United following reports of derogatory chants aimed at the mother of Manchester City player Phil Foden during their recent derby match. Despite acknowledging the chants as unacceptable, the FA's decision stems from its interpretation of existing regulations, which primarily address discriminatory behavior targeted at participants of the game. However, anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out has condemned the chants.

Kick It Out, an organization dedicated to combating discrimination in football, has expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing that "sexism isn't banter." The charity argues that such chants create an unwelcome and unsafe environment for women in football, extending beyond the immediate targets to affect the broader community of female players, fans, and staff. Kick It Out's chief operating officer, Hollie Varney, voiced disappointment in the FA's decision, pointing to a pattern of insufficient responses to sexist and misogynistic chanting incidents throughout the season.

While Manchester United privately acknowledged the chants were unacceptable, the FA’s decision underscores the complexities of enforcing standards of conduct within football stadiums. The organization's guidelines prohibit abusive chanting and discriminatory behavior from fans, including references to gender. Some observers, like former Watford striker Troy Deeney, argue that offensive chants are, unfortunately, an inherent aspect of the game, particularly in heated rivalries. However, Kick It Out maintains a firm stance that more decisive actions, including bans, fines, and educational initiatives, are necessary to foster a more inclusive atmosphere in football and combat sexism within the sport.
