MLB: Yankees' Torpedo Bats Contribute to Record-Breaking Home Run Game
The New York Yankees unleashed a barrage of nine home runs, a franchise record, in a recent game, sparking curiosity about a unique bat design used by some players. These "torpedo" bats, featuring a barrel closer to the hands, have been garnering attention for their potential to improve contact. YES Network announcer Michael Kay noted that the Yankees' analytics department studied Anthony Volpe's hitting patterns and designed the bats to concentrate wood where he typically makes contact.
According to MLB regulations, the bats remain legal as long as they adhere to specific dimensions and are made from one piece of solid wood. Former Yankees infielder Kevin Smith revealed that Aaron Leanhardt, previously with the Yankees' front office, spearheaded the "Torpedo" barrel design. The intent behind the design is to increase the mass where hitters frequently connect with the ball, potentially turning missed hits into productive plays.
While the design is legal, other figures in the league have taken notice. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch mentioned having brief conversations regarding the design during spring training, illustrating the league-wide buzz that the Yankees' new bats are generating. Whether these bats have a lasting impact on performance remains to be seen, but their initial impact was undeniable in the Yankees' historic home run display.
