SWOSU Softball Struggles in Doubleheader Against Arkansas-Monticello
The Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) softball team faced a challenging day on the road, losing both games of a doubleheader against Arkansas-Monticello (UAM) on Sunday. The Bulldogs fell 4-1 in the first game and narrowly lost the second game 8-7, as announced by Assistant AD/Media Relations Jon Chidester. The losses put SWOSU at 10-15 overall and 3-10 in the Great American Conference (GAC).
In the first game, Skyla McPhillips provided the sole run for SWOSU with a home run in the second inning. However, Arkansas-Monticello responded with a three-run rally in the third inning, securing the lead and ultimately the victory. Pitcher Alexis Taylor pitched a complete game but took the loss, with the SWOSU offense struggling to generate momentum after the initial extra-base hits early in the game. Despite the defeat, the Bulldogs looked forward to the opportunity to bounce back and compete hard in Monday's finale.
The second game saw a more offensive performance from SWOSU, but it was not enough to secure a win. Trailing 8-4 in the sixth inning, the Bulldogs mounted a late comeback, scoring three runs to close the gap. Kaylee Barkley's two-RBI hit highlighted the rally. Despite their efforts, SWOSU fell short, losing 8-7. Riley Lusk started the game, pitching three innings, while Hannah Nieuwenhuis took the loss in relief. Chesnie Hewitt had a strong game two, contributing with her second home run of the season and Riley,Barkley and Morton all accounted for seven of SWOSU’s 10 hits and all of the RBI. The Bulldogs aimed to come out strong in Monday's final game, focusing on a focused team performance.
